Background
Tip Top-Lit.® is an individualised literacy learning programme for children aged 6-11, designed specifically for those with dyslexia and/or not yet reaching their potential in literacy. The programme teaches key literacy skills, combined with an emotional regulation component that builds positive self-narrative, confidence and self-regulation. It uses evidence-based strategies to increase autonomy in children’s learning, to enhance engagement, motivation and success.
The programme is based on the understanding that beliefs are controllable and flexible, guiding the way children construct their reality and experience of learning. It aligns with current research on the importance of growth mindset on children’s learning potential.
Process
Prior to attending classes, children are individually assessed to ascertain their current level of literacy attainment (see fee schedule below). This is to ensure that children are grouped appropriately, according to their age, ability and learning preferences, and that their progress can be measured. Assessments are combined with an introductory meeting with the practitioner, to establish a rapport with the child, including affirmations and goal setting.
Participating children are expected to adhere to some basic rules of conduct to ensure a positive and supportive dynamic within groups, and to arrive at and leave the premises quietly.
Sessions
Classes are conducted in small groups of up to 4 participants. Working within a group instils a sense of community and belonging, which supports a child’s cognitive and emotional development. The programme accordingly welcomes all children wishing to reach their potential in learning. However, it is necessary that children are considerate of the needs of other participants, and are able to integrate within a group setting.
Sessions are also provided individually (1:1) for children who may benefit from a set period of additional learning support to build their confidence, abilities and/or motivation.
